The Sacrificed Vowels in our old PAYG texts
Our generation learnt to use abbreviations due to constraints.
With limited credit on PAYG SIMs and too much to say, we always shortened and trimmed our words to fit the 160-character limit. It was a shame about all those sacrificed vowels, as they were the letters most often clipped.
I wonder if that’s why our generation’s voice became clipped? Perhaps, as we removed the vowel sounds from our messages, they also left our lives.
We were left with consonants, always silent…
But even in those days of character scarcity, I never compromised my own character. I never removed any vowels from my ‘I love you’ declarations.
Instead of cutting letters, I used three more characters to put three dots side by side at the end of my expression of love to show the infinity of my feelings.I have never been one of those quiet lovers.
I have always loved a lot. Or at least I believed that I loved a lot…
Times have changed and there are no letter restrictions in our lives to tell our love.
Now, I can write as many sentences and paragraphs as I want to describe my love.
However, what is limited now is the number of people I love.
I no longer write to people I ‘think I love’, but to those I ‘truly’ love.
And the number of them is no more than the number of fingers on one hand…
